Butterfly Theatre presents Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Butterfly Theatre began in 2013 with Boston Marriage in the Feast Festival and have produced 1 – 2 plays each year. From 2013 – 2019 we joined forces with The Wheatsheaf Hotel who were our resident base for our Beer Theatre productions but in 2020 we are producing our immersive style of theatre at The Holden Street Theatres Studio in the critically acclaimed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee.
Join George and Martha for an alcohol-fuelled night of fun and games in the multi-award wining drama by acclaimed American playwright Edward Albee. First staged in 1962 and made famous by the 1966 film version starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Directed by Angela Short and Matthew Chapman and featuring Brant Eustice as George, Bronwyn Ruciak as Martha, Robert Bell as Nick and Madeleine Herd as Honey. The experienced cast share multiple awards between them – including 4 Adelaide Critics Circle Individual Achievement Awards as well as 3 nominations).

Directors Short and Chapman state “Albee once said of the audience of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf “I want them to be willing to reconsider whether all the values that they brought into the theatre are still valid when they leave. I don’t want to necessarily tell them how to think, but I want them to be examining those values and see if they still believe them.”  These two directors have certainly reconsidered their feelings on this play. It is no longer the dark heavy, treacle-like play we remembered from our university days.  There is so much humour and quick wit that it positively refreshing. We have taken the theme of the boxing ring and used it as the basis for our set. Then there is all that truth and illusion…… or is there…..who knows? It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt…..”
